Where does the Money go?
Unwrapping the whole process
Oxfam Canada works to find lasting solutions to poverty in more than 20 countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas, and the gifts in this catalogue help us achieve that work. Your Oxfam Unwrapped gift will help people living in poverty gain greater levels of self-sufficiency and control over their lives and the future of their communities.
We're often asked: "What actually happens when I buy a donkey?" Rest assured, we won't actually try to wrap it up, ears and all, and ship it off to Africa!
Each animal given through Unwrapped is purchased in the region where it is needed. Oxfam's program officers ensure that communities have the resources and training to take on the responsibility of animal rearing. When more animals are purchased than a community can safely maintain, Oxfam Canada ensures the funds are used to support our overall work within the same or a similar program area.
When you buy a sheep, goat, donkey, or chicken through Unwrapped, you are supporting Oxfam's livelihoods programs. These gifts are not about food security - they.re about ensuring communities have access to marketable products, like eggs, wool or milk.
Your gift also provides vaccinations, health and market awareness training and much more. More importantly, the income your gift generates creates greater self-sufficiency, self-esteem and educational opportunities.
Purchasing a radio, hygiene kit, household kit, survival kit, Oxfam bucket, bicycle, training for disaster preparedness, public health promotion or training on gender-based violence in emergencies means you're supporting our emergency response, reconstruction and disaster preparedness programs. This ensures we can act quickly when disasters happen and help women and men rebuild their lives.
A gift of tools or training supports the different and innovative ways Oxfam provide people, especially women, with the education, skills and resources they need to further develop themselves, their families and their communities.
A gift of safe water, HIV and AIDS education or community health training supports essential services that are recognized as basic human rights.
Helping people raise their voice is a key part of Oxfam's work. Our advocacy work focuses on changing policies and practices, both locally and globally, that perpetuate the cycle of poverty in poor countries.
Your gift of a People Power Pack, training on gender-based violence or funding for a change promoter will help raise voices and awareness to get to the root causes of poverty and injustice.
Every gift offered through Oxfam Unwrapped represents the kind of work we do in communities around the world. The actual number of items delivered is determined by community needs. Should we end up with more of a particular item than a community can reasonably or responsibly manage, Oxfam Canada will ensure the funds are used to support our overall work within the same or a similar program area.
Because you're helping Oxfam Canada fight poverty, your purchases are also tax creditable. Once you've purchased your gift, a tax receipt will be sent to you via email or post. Oxfam Canada is only able to issue a charitable tax receipt in the name of the individual who has made the donation/gift.
